WALT DISNEY STUDIO
The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
nine (9) original production animation drawings blue and black pencil on nine (9) 11.5" x 12.5" re-registered animation sheets, image size ranges: 3.25" x 1.75" to 5" x 4.5"
These nine (9) full-figure rough animation drawings of villain Ratigan and hero Basil of Baker Street were created by Disney animator Mark Henn in development of a scene in the animated feature. Five (5) are animator’s extreme drawings with grid at upper right. Included are one of Ratigan and Basil, one of Ratigan, and seven of Basil.
This scene is set in "Ratigan's secret lair" shortly after Basil and Dr. Dawson have been captured by the criminal mastermind and his gang. Ratigan manhandles Basil and triumphantly taunts his victim: "You fool! Isn't it clear to you yet? The superior mind has triumphed! I've won!"
Mark Henn supervised the animation of this scene, and these are his drawings. He wrote Ratigan's word of dialogue on one drawing at upper right: "mind" and the numbers "47", "79", "81", "83", 85", "87", "91", "97", "111" at upper right to indicate each original's place in the scene. Registration was changed during production and peg holes are attached at the bottom with corresponding designations written on them.
The Great Mouse Detective was Mr. Henn's first film as a supervising animator after he joined The Walt Disney Studios in 1980. He has been a Disney supervising animator on Oliver & Company (1988), The Little Mermaid (1989), The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Mulan (1998), Lilo & Stitch (2002), Home on the Range (2004), The Princess and the Frog (2009), and Frozen (2013).
