The history of watches date back to the 15th and 16th centuries with watches during this time period featuring only the hour hand. It wasn't until the 17th century that minutes and seconds were added to the features of watches. Created initially for women, the design of wrist watches were typically elegant pieces of jewelry and strictly worn by women. Men preferred to carry a pocket watch because of the symbolism of being sophisticated and well-to-do.

For National Watch Day (June 19th), here is a clip from when Professor Ratigan gets a bit impatient with Basil running late on finding his secret lair. He pulls out his pocket watch, noting he was expecting him 15 minutes earlier, asking if he had trouble with his chemistry set.

Basil, in turn, insults him and calls him a slimy, contemptible sewer rat. The animation of Ratigan's response of never moving a muscle except to close the lid of the watch is classic comedy gold!
